Scheduled for today, North Carolina Secretary of Commerce Sharon Decker’s visit to Laurinburg has been postponed due to illness.
Decker is “a little under the weather, but we absolutely expect to have her here, probably in June,” said Tonia Stephenson, president of the Laurinburg-Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce.
Stephenson said that Decker’s staff made it clear to her that thesecretary “definitely wants to come to Scotland County.”
“It’s not a negative thing at all, she’s just sick,” Stephenson said on Thursday.
Appointed by Gov. Pat McCrory in January of this year, Decker was scheduled to start her visit at City Hall and take a brief tour of Laurinburg before stopping in at the recently-opened Small Business Innovation Center.
Local elected officials were expected at the center for the 90-minute event along with representatives of a number of other community organizations. An announcement related to economic development was also scheduled to be made by the chamber during the visit.
“That all has been canceled and the announcement will be held until (Secretary Decker) makes her visit,” Stephenson said.
