Two new family nurse practitioners are now providing medical care in the Laurinburg community.
Donna Edge Gibson and Mary Newton-Shy recently completed a post-master’s program at the University of South Alabama School of Nursing. They both are now certified family nurse practitioners.
Gibson, who is a Laurinburg native, joined the staff of Scotland Surgical and GI, bringing 11 years of nursing experience to her nurse practitioner role.
“While previously working at Scotland Memorial I got to know general surgeons Doctors Steve Lanuti and Brian Parkes. And, while in school to earn my family nurse practitioner credentials I had the opportunity to shadow them,” she said. “Initially, my duties at Scotland Surgical & GI consist of training with the surgeons and physician assistant at the practice and at Scotland Wound Healing Center and rounding on the surgical patients in the hospital.”
Dr. Brian Parkes, general surgeon, said thatnhe was glad that Gibson joined the practice.
“We have needed a second mid-level provider in the practice for a while. She is an excellent addition to our staff and an asset to our patients.”
Dr. Steve Lanuti, general surgeon added, that “the addition of Donna enhances our ability to offer comprehensive GI services, including a hepatitis clinic. Plus, this will decrease the amount of wait time in the office and allow our practice to schedule office visits five days a week.”
Newton-Shy, a Cheraw native, joined the staff of Scotland Medical Center. She provides care to patients over the age of 21, including women’s gynecological care. She says her 15 years of previous nursing experience is an asset to the medical practice.
“I love the challenge of diagnosing patients and then treating them. My teaching background is definitely a plus for providing care to my patients. I love teaching and know that this is such an important piece in providing patient care.”
Dr. Mark Navaid, internal medicine physician at Scotland Medical Center said Newton-Shy provides family health care and is well known in the nursing community, having taught nurses at Richmond Community College for several years.
“Mary communicates well and is very friendly. She has a dynamic personality and is an asset to our medical practice and to this community. I like the fact that she is interested in providing patient education along with medical care.”
Both women have worked as instructors in the Associate Degree Nursing program at Richmond Community College for the past three years and have actively participated in the recruitment, enrollment, and advisement of prospective nursing students.
Gibson earned a master’s degree in 2010 in Executive Nursing Administration from the University of South Alabama, School of Nursing.
Newton-Shy earned her master’s degree in 2002 in Health Systems Management from Queens College in Charlotte.
