A Maxton man was killed after being hit by a tractor-trailer on US 74 on Friday morning, according to a state Highway Patrol report.

At 4:44 a.m., 34-year-old Shawn Bryant was walking north across the westbound travel lane of US 74 bypass near Old Johns Road when he was struck by a tractor-trailer travelling in the left lane.

The left front corner of the vehicle hit Bryant and propelled him into the median cable. Bryant was transported by Scotland County EMS to Scotland Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead.

It is believed that Bryant was crossing the road after his car broke down. According to the report, he was probably not visible to the tractor-trailer driver.

The driver, John Burke of Red Springs, was uninjured.

According to a witness, the tractor-trailer was travelling slower than the posted speed limit of 70. The driver pulled over some 1,000 feet from the scene of the accident. He is unlikely to face charges.
