John Halbert McGirt, Jr., 77, of Laurinburg passed away on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 at Morrison Manor.

Funeral services will be helad at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Faith Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Jim Bumgardner. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Fowler “Bobbie” McGirt, his daughter Vicky McGirt Holmes (Boyd) of Laurinburg, his son Jeffrey D. McGirt (Denise) of Maxton, his sisters Norma Kennerly of Denver, Betty Smith of Laurinburg, and Patricia Hardee of Fischers, Ind., and his grandchildren Katherine Holmes and Mary Ann McGirt.

Born on Oct. 29, 1935 in Scotland County, he was a son of the late John H. and Minnie Ellen Shepherd McGirt. He served for four years in the U.S. Navy and later worked in sales for Electrical Equipment Co., Bryant Supply, and Longley Supply Co. of Lumberton.

An active member of Faith Presbyterian Church, John was a former Deacon, an Elder, Sunday school superintendent, choir member, taught Sunday school, and was instrumental in the annual ingathering. John also enjoyed golf, grilling outside, and family get-togethers.

Memorials are requested for Faith Presbyterian Church, 2220 Elm Ave., Laurinburg, NC 28352.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
