Saturday night’s Second Saturday Jazz Jam has been canceled.
Officials with the Storytelling & Arts Center in Laurinburg say they could not hold the event because a furnace at the center is being repaired.
“There is no heat in the building,” said Jan Schmidt, center executive director. “It is too cold even for great jazz. The next Jazz Jam will be announced soon.”
The event is part of the continuing Jazz Jam and Cabaret program held the second Saturday of each month at SACS from 7 to 10 pm.
Typically, the duo Day and Knight Jazz plays, but jazz musicians and vocalists can take part in the jam sessions.
The duo consists of Michael Green Knight, a self-taught guitarist, and Arthur Smith, a saxophonist, both of whom played with bands including the Psychic Power Band, the Soul Tabulations, the Coachman and Four, and the Red Toppers.
They were openers for Mothers Finest, Average White Band, and the Isley Brothers. Theyhave also played back up for artists Teddy Pendergrass, Clarence Carter, and Johnny Tailor.Day and Knight Jazz, and have performed for many events in the region and at the Dizzy Gillespie Jazz Festival in Cheraw, SC.
