Scotland Memorial Foundation will hold its 10th Annual Women’s Health Event next month to provide women with a forum to discuss health concerns.

The event will begin at 7 a.m. on Feb. 2 with cholesterol, weight and body fat, flexibility, blood pressure, and bone density screenings. It will be held at First United Methodist Church.

A light breakfast will be provided at 8:30. Each participant will then attend three breakout sessions of their choice, with topics including heart disease, cancer, irritable bowel syndrome and colorectal cancer, diabetes, pain, joint problems and osteoporosis, and women’s safety. The sessions will include 25 to 50 participants and will be led by health care professionals. A few extracurricular sessions in floral arrangement and fashion will also be offered.

“We have 18 sessions scheduled, many of them are led by physicians,” said hospital spokesperson Karen Gainey. “We have one led by a person who is part of the Get Real and Heel program, we have two dietitians, a diabetes educator, the director of security at the hospital, and we have Charles Wentz, who is a licensed family counselor.”

Celia Rivenbark, a North Carolina humorist and journalist, will provide a comedic keynote address during lunch. The Women’s Health Event, themed Learn, Laugh, and Love, will offer important insights and information for all women, regardless of their health history.

“It’s a really big mixture of women - some of them have had health problems, some of them are coming because they don’t want to have health problems, most are really interested in learning how to stay healthy,” said Gainey. “We have a very diverse population group.”

Each participant will be asked to bring three non-perishable food items for donation to Church and Community Services. Those who do so will receive a “Go Red for Women” gift to commemorate Women’s Heart Disease Month.

The cost for the event is $20 per person, with breakfast, snacks, and lunch included.
