The Scotland County Board of Education will name its newest member during the regular meeting on Monday.

The board took applications from the general public for the empty non-Stewartsville Township seat vacated by James Underwood last year. The eligible applicants were interviewed during the board’s January meeting.

Each board member will cast a vote for one of the five applicants: insurance agency owner and former school board member Charlie Fipps of Laurel Hill, retired educator Emma McNeil-Stone of Laurinburg, business owner Jeff Shelley of Laurel Hill, Hoke County Schools Executive Director of Federal Programs and School Improvement Stacy Stewart of Gibson, and physical therapist Jamie Sutherland of Laurinburg.

The voting will take place during open session, and according to board regulations, board members have not conferred about the candidates or their voting choices.

In other business, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Pamela Baldwin will update the board on progress made by elementary school students with Fast ForWord, a computer program designed to accelerate students’ progress in reading comprehension.

The board will also take a provisional calendar for 2013-2014 school year under review for 30 days. This draft of the calendar begins the school year on Monday, Aug. 26 and ends on Thursday, June 12, 2014, with 185 days of student instruction.
