Stolen lottery tickets won a trip to jail for one Laurinburg teenager, authorities say.

Officers arrested Markail Darrell McKinnon, 19, of Lees Mill Road, on Wednesday and charged him with stealing 10 Lucky 7s lottery card games from Nic's Pic Kwik at 12001 McColl Road, according to a Laurinburg police report.

The theft occurred Tuesday, according to police. The instant scratch off ticket has a top prize of $700. Each ticket cost $1.

McKinnon was recognized by a clerk at the gas station when he returned to the store the next day. He was apprehended crossing McColl Road toward Pine Acres Motel, according to police.

The report said police identified McKinnon as the suspect on video footage of the incident. The teen has also admitted to the crime, the report said.

Officials added that it may have been difficult for McKinnon to collect on a winning ticket. Tickets are voided when they are reported stolen, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery Commission.

McKinnon is charged with misdemeanor larceny and was placed in Scotland County jail under a $1,000 bond.
