• Maxton man's body was found Sunday dumped on the side of the road.
A body found Sunday on the side of a road near Old Hundred had at least five gunshot wounds, according to Sheriff Shep Jones.
The body has been identified as 31-year old Chris McKoy, of 127 Honey Lane Road, Maxton.
Jones said McKoy was discovered Sunday at about 7:30 a.m. on Rockingham Road between Corbitt Street and Old Wire Road, about two miles southwest of Laurel Hill.
Investigators say McKoy was shot in the head, chest and hands, according to Jones. The sheriff said investigators will not know exact number of shots or the cause of death until an autopsy is completed.
Jones said the incident likely happened somewhere else and the body dumped on Rockingham Road.
The state road has no street lights and has dense woods on either side of the road.
The body probably wasn't there very long, Jones said, as there were no signs of decay.
He said that a blue bandana was found near the body, but would not say if investigators believe the shooting was gang-related.
Jones said that McKoy was wearing black jeans, a red and gray shirt and Timberline boots when investigators found him. He also did not have any identification on him.
Jones said the man's wallet was missing and it took most of Sunday morning to identify McKoy.
Investigators used a tattoo on his arm with the nickname "Amp" to identify him.
Jones expects to have more information on Wednesday, when an autopsy at Chapel Hill should be completed.
"We are going to continue to work and see if we can find the person responsible for this."
The Highway Patrol helped secure the scene and assisted with the investigation, Jones added.
Hoover Oxendine was one of the people who reported the body. He said he was driving down Rockingham Road when he saw it.
"I happened to glance and I see the body laying out there."
He said the body was right beside the highway.
Oxendine bid not believe the body had been there for very long and was uncertain of the cause of death or the identity.
McKoy had a number of convictions in neighboring Robeson County, including assault, resisting officers and a number of drug charges, according to DOC records.
He spent about 18 months in prison.
