Neither rain, nor track troubles could dampen the spirits of Pack 447 Cub Scouts as they raced to victory at the annual Pinewood Derby at Scotland High School recently.
Scouts raced wooden cars that they designed and built themselves with help from adult partners. Two leaders acted as callers for the races because indicator lights were not functioning properly on the old track. The event was held Feb. 23
Tiger Cub Scouts Bryant Kimbrell, Eli Hicks, and Max Besteman took home first, second and third place respectively, while Harmon Herring, Colton Pfistner, and Frank Ladd did the same for the Wolves.
Bear Cubs Kerry McPherson, Micah Oxendine, and Jackson Kimbrell placed first, second, and third in their division. Aiden Lopez, Alec Houg, and Kristian Peeler won first, second, and third place trophies for the Webelos. All of the winners, except the Webelos Scouts, built their first Pinewood Derby cars this year. Overall honors went to Harmon Herring, 1st place; Colton Pfistner, 2nd place; and Aiden Lopez, 3rd place. Special medals were also awarded for achievements such as most creative design, best paint job, and most colorful, and fastest looking.
First-place winners Bryant Kimbrell, Harmon Herring, Kerry McPherson, and Aiden Lopez will represent Pack 447 at the District Scout Show in Raeford on Saturday.
Scouts are expected to begin fundraising soon for the purchase of a much-needed new Pinewood Derby track.
Pack 447 Scouts are currently selling discount cards to help finance their spring camp at McNeil Cub Scout World in White Oak. Cards cost $5 and offer discounts at local businesses.
