Scotland High School seniors had the opportunity to celebrate their top-dog status on Friday, Feb. 1, during Scotland High School’s GEAR UP Rally.

The GEAR UP Program, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, prepares students for post graduate educational opportunities, hosted the “Keep Calm and GEAR UP” rally to thank Scotland seniors for their hard work so far this year.

The rally featured door prizes, guest speakers and t-shirt for all seniors at Scotland High School, SEarCH and Shaw Academy.

The rally invited all Scotland High School seniors, regardless of post graduation plans, to the event.

“GEAR UP is a program for kids and their families to know that they have a chance to go to college,” Scotland High School principal Beth Ammons said.

The rally featured 2012 Scotland High School graduate Levern Hamer as the event’s guest speaker.

Hamer focused on student’s having a plan during and after high school and the importance of being prepared for life after high school.

Scotland senior Caitlin McCormick said that seeing former local graduates succeeding was important.

“The rally was a great way for all of the seniors to come together for the first time this year,” she said. “The local speakers also proved that hard work does pay off.”

Along with Hamer, the rally brought in local speakers from 215 on Main and a local lawyer’s office.

The rally was sponsored by over 15 local businesses including The UPS Store, The Purcell Clinic, Captain D’s, Walmart, Lowes, Rent-A-Center, BB&T, ShirtTales, Subway, Harris Teeter, State Farm-Becca Hughes Agency, Realty World-Graham/Grubbs & Associations, Scottish Food Systems, Inc., Wade S. Dunbar Insurance Agency and Richmond Community College.

With college decisions looming near, the GEAR UP rally provided a fun environment for the senior Scots before the end of their final semester.
