GIBSONVILLE- With Christmas behind them, the Scotland basketball teams returned the hardwood Monday night and both picked up big wins.
The Scots had a trio score in double figures as they built up a big first quarter lead over Carrboro and never looked back, defeating the Jaguars, 72-29, on day one of the Eastern Guilford Christmas Holiday Tournament.
“That was a real good win for us,” Scotland coach Mike Ritchie said. “It was a good warm-up for us and hopefully we can build on the win for the rest of the tournament.”
Dominique Clark led the way for the Scots (4-6) with 12 points while Mo Covington and Otis Cromartie chipped in 10 apiece.
“He gave us some good minutes off the bench,” Ritchie said of Cromartie. “The bench got alot of minutes, they played hard and did a good job.”
In the girls game, the Lady Scots had a full roster for the first time in over three weeks and got a 51-42 win over Carrboro.
Tierra Pate, who was playing her first game since injuring her shoulder on Dec. 1, scored 12 points for Scotland (7-3).
“We played well against a real aggressive team,” Lady Scots coach David Johnson said. “Despite lacking size, they (Carrboro) were a feisty bunch.”
Scotland led by as much 13 in the game, before turnovers kept them from putting it out of reach.
“We had some turnovers that kept them in the game,” Johnson said. “Overall, we made enough shots and got some put backs on the offensive end to stretch out the lead.”
Brittany Dockery matched her teammate with 12 points while Ariel Ratcliff added nine.
Both teams will play Eastern Guilford in the semifinals tonight with a win putting them in the tournament championship. The boys will tip-off at 7 pm, with the girls game slated to start around 8:30 pm.
