ROCKINGHAM-The Richmond junior varsity football team picked the worst possible time of the season to play its poorest.
Behind Derek Barnes’ 213 total yards and three touchdowns, Scotland defeated Richmond 19-6 Thursday night at Raider Stadium to win the JV Southeastern Conference championship.
“Our JV team has really played good all year, and we had a few ninth graders come up and help,” JV Scots coach David Hunt said. “To come down here in Richmond and win in this environment was really special.”
Hunt also gave credit to his defense that forced three Richmond (8-2, 4-1) turnovers and stopped the Raiders’ offense three times in the red zone on fourth down.
“I think part of their mistakes were made due to them being a little sloppy that put them in bad field positions, but our defense has played well all season and we have great linebackers that anchored our defense,” said Hunt.
Scotland (8-2,5-0) was faced with third-and-29 at its own 10-yard line, but Barnes caught a screen pass from quarterback Marquis Pegues and ran 90 yards up the field for the touchdown to give the Scots a 7-0 lead with 8:45 remaining in the first quarter.
After Richmond was forced to punt, Barnes struck again on the next play as he broke free for a 60-yard touchdown run to extend Scotland’s lead to 13-0 with 4:58 left in the first.
“We had some missed assignments, we had some people lined up wrong and we missed a bunch of tackles on both of those long plays,” JV Raiders coach Steve Wood said.
Late the second, the Raiders were stopped on fourth down at the Scots 5, which was the third time Richmond was stuffed on fourth down inside the 20 in the first half.
Scotland then used a seven-play drive capped by Barnes’ 7-yard touchdown catch on a screen pass on fourth-and-goal to push the advantage to 19-0 at halftime.
The Raiders used a 10-play drive late in third capped by Ridge Sato’s 5-yard touchdown scamper to cut Scotland’s lead to 19-6.
In the fourth, Richmond caused a Scots’ fumble, but two plays later, Raheem Ellerbe’s pass was intercepted by Ernie Robinson and Richmond never threatened again.
