WILSON— St. Andrews Presbyterian College was held to a season-low 33.3-percent field goal percentage as Conference Carolinas pre-season favorite and defending champions, Barton College, coasted to an 85-61 win to start the 2010 portion of season on Monday night in the ‘Dog House’.

Freshman point guard Gerald Boston posted game-highs of 18 points and six assists to lead the Bulldogs to the 24 point victory.

The first game of 2010 vaulted the BC to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in Conference Carolinas. Barton plays at Queens University of Charlotte on Thursday night at 7:30 and visits Lees-McRae for a 4 p.m. tilt on Saturday. SAPC slipped to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in league play and visits Coker College on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.

Seven different players scored in a 17-3 start for the Bulldogs and they were never threatened by the taller Knights, who rank third nationally in blocked shots. The early run worked the crowd into a frenzy and the Bulldogs rode that momentum throughout. Barton, which canned seven of its first nine shots, was up 41-25 at halftime.

SAPC closed within 52-40 early in the second half with a 9-1 run that included seven points from a trio of reserves, but forward Eddie Kershaw scored seven points in a 12-2 run for the Bulldogs as the lead escalated to 68-46. The largest lead was 28 points late in game, when each team emptied its bench.

Barton won the rebounding battle 46-37 and harassed the Knights into a season-most 25 turnovers that led to 21 points. The Bulldogs finished 33-of-72 from the floor for 45.8- percent while SAPC was 19-of-57 for 33.3- percent.

Kershaw tallied 12 points, sophomore Jo Jo Velez dominated down low with a career-high 17 rebounds and 10 points and senior Charles Gamble added 10 points.

St. Andrews' lone double-figure scorer was 6-5 junior forward Marvin Jackson with 12 points. Jackson -- who is the reigning Conference Carolinas Player of the Week -- just missed a double-double with nine rebounds before fouling out.

Knights’ junior 6-8 forward Zack Garst collected a team and career high 16 rebounds. Classmate 6-11 center Marcus Connor had a game-high four blocks.

Sophomore guard Kurt Fenderbosch scored nine points on a trio of three-pointers while Connor and sophomore Antonio Moffitt each bucketed eight points.
