Richmond Community College begins a new plumbing course Nov. 16 at the RCC Trades Building on the Hamlet campus.

Classes meet Monday through Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m. and end December 10th. Tuition is $175.

“This is the first of a series of courses that can lead someone into an entry-level job. Between now and June, there will be four courses that include plumbing, pipe fitting, and blueprint reading,” said Marvena Rush-Wall, Director of Occupation Extension and Prison Programs.

A one-week course on carpentry fundamentals begins November 9 and is followed in January with an intense course on residential framing. The carpentry course meets Monday through Thursday from 6 – 10 p.m. at the Brooks Building, which is adjacent to the RCC Scotland Center in Laurinburg. It is followed by a series of courses in construction estimating, green construction, and blueprint reading.

The JobsNOW Program is offered by RCC and the ESC JobLink Centers and offers qualified dislocated and other unemployed workers the opportunity to attend classes while still receiving unemployment benefits. Qualified participants may receive tuition assistance. The goal of the program is to provide job training in six months or less.

Courses beginning in January are carpentry, landscaping, electrical wiring, masonry, and plumbing. The courses were selected based upon projected job openings. Some of the courses include preparation for the WorkKeys exam that leads to a Career Readiness Certificate. Many employers are now requiring job applicants to have the certificate as documentation of their skill levels.
