Laurinburg native Russ Adams has moved on from the Toronto Blue Jays organization, and is trying to get back to the show with the San Diego Padres.
The Blue Jays designated Adams for assignment on July 3, marking the second time the organization that took him as the 14th overall pick in 2002 had done that this year. Adams, who started the year with the Las Vegas 51's — the Triple-A affiliate of the Jays — cleared waivers and elected to become a free agent rather than return to Vegas. He was then claimed by the Portland Beavers, another Pacific Coast League team and the Padres' Triple-A affiliate.
Adams is hitting .233 (7-for-30) with one triple, two RBIs, three runs scored and five walks in nine games since signing with Portland. Adams' best game with the Beavers so far came on July 18, when he went 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and two RBIs.
Adams was called up from Toronto and played in eight Major League games between June 21 and June 30, hitting .200 (4-for-20) with two runs scored, one walk and one strikeout. Adams did not have an extra-base hit and did not drive in a run in his 20 at-bats with the Jays.
The former Scotland High School and North Carolina Tar Heel standout finishes his Toronto career with a .247 (218-for-884) average, 17 homers, 46 doubles, seven triples, 113 RBIs, 125 runs scored and 15 stolen bases in 286 games played.
Adams hit .294 (30-for-102) with a homer, three triples, seven doubles, 11 RBIs, 18 runs and 10 walks with the Vegas 51's this season.
Adams spent over a month on the disabled list in Vegas due to a broken hand, and he appeared in the infield and the outfield with the 51's.
