One of the many racers at the Maxton Time Trials died in an accident on Saturday, according to the East Coast Timing Association.

Race Director Keith Turk confirmed the vehicular fatality. He said the motorcycle accident occurred at the end of the track at the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport and that the incident was under investigation by the association.

He said he was not at liberty to release the name of the driver or any other information at this time.

According to several blogs and online racing forums, 67-year old Gaetano "Guy" Lombardi was the driver who died.

He reached 192 mph during his final run on the track, according to figures on the East Coast Timing Association's website.

He is the second fatality at the track. Dave Owen died on Sept. 27, 2008 from an accident on the same track.

The state Highway Patrol and the Scotland County Sheriff's Department had no record of the accident.
