Robbery suspect flees
This is a video released by Maxton police of a robber leaving the Family Dollar Sunday.
Maxton police are looking for two men who robbed the Maxton Family Dollar in broad daylight.

A surveillance video showing one of the men leaving through a back door has been released. The video can be viewed online at www.laurinburgexchange.com.

No one was injured during the incident.

Detective Jamie Oxendine said the robbery happened Sunday at 3:23 p.m.

"Two black males entered the store carrying guns. They robbed the clerk and left with an undisclosed amount of cash."

One man was approximately 6 feet tall while the other was approximately 5 feet 4 inches.

Three customers were in the store at the time, but Oxendine was unsure if they were robbed as well.

He said the men were wearing masks and gloves and could not be identified with the video footage of the crime.

Police have released a video clip of one of the suspects leaving out the back door that does show portions of the man's face.

In the video, the guy takes about two minutes to unlock and open the back door, then briefly glances around before running through the door.

The Maxton detective said no one had been charged in the incident but would not say whether or not police had someone in custody with the incident.

The management of Family Dollar declined to comment on the robbery.

Donald Maynor, who lives beside the store at 201 South Patterson Street, said he watched as people fled from the store.

"The two ladies that worked there came out running. They were crying and carrying on."

He said they were asking people to call 9-1-1.

Mayner also said one man inside the store told him a robber put a gun to his head and took his wallet.

He believes the two men ran out the back door, through a field behind the store.

Mayner was critical of the police response to the incident.

He said it took 10 minutes for police to arrive, which he considered slow since the station is about a half-mile drive from the store.

Mayner said they were ineffective when they did get to the scene.

"They didn't really do nothing. They just circled the store and that's it."

Mayner was not the one critical of the response. One news report said that one of the suspects was still in the store when officers arrived but still managed to escape.

Oxendine said he was not present for the response and could not discuss it.
