A Laurinburg teenager was shot on Friday on Produce Market Road, according to police.
Around 11 p.m., 18-year-old Nicholas Sims of Millstone Drive was driving north on Produce Market Road with two acquaintances.
After stopping the car at the intersection of Produce Market and McGirts Bridge roads, police say Sims fired a 38-caliber handgun into the air twice.
After he resumed driving on Produce Market Road, two shots were fired from outside the vehicle, hitting Sims on the left side of his head, according to police.
“According to witnesses, this was a random act of shooting in a neighborhood, which was the cause of the return fire that struck Sims in the head,” said Capt. Kim Monroe of the Laurinburg Police Department.
His injury is not life-threatening according to Monroe, however Sims was transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital and later taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The handgun, found in Sims’ car was confiscated by police, Monroe said. Authorities are not clear why Sims was in the residential area near Galilee United Methodist Church.
“He did not say why he fired the weapon,” Monroe said. “He wasn’t in a condition to talk to us very much.”
The case is still under investigation, at the conclusion of which police will decide whether charges will be brought against Sims.
“I would hate to speculate right now until we do a further interview with him,” said Monroe.
