The congregation of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church will celebrate their 150th anniversary Sept. 19-20 with special events both days.
Jim McQueen, chairman of the planning committee, said members of the church are "eagerly anticipating" the milestone celebration at the historical church.
"Several former ministers, directors of Christian Education, and choir directors are planning to return to join us for the weekend," McQueen said.
The Saturday program, scheduled to begin at approximately 7:15 p.m., will feature a historical skit written and directed by church member Mark Mannette.
On Sunday, the 11 a.m. worship service will include special music by a brass quartet, as well as an anniversary hymn composed by former church member Dr. Mel Bringle. A nationally recognized hymn composer, Bringle is a professor of philosophy and religion at Brevard College and a former professor of religion at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.
A covered dish luncheon will follow the morning service.
"A special treat will be a hymn festival beginning at 4 p.m. and led by Dr. Bringle," McQueen said. "Titled 'From Highland Peaks: A Heritage of Scottish Hymns', the program will include the singing of hymns, Mel's commentary on various pieces of music, and performances by the UNC Brass Quartet and the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir."
The event will be directed by Dr. Gary Wright with accompaniment by Ms. Camille DeVaney, organist.
Committee member Susan Wentz cited the importance of the church throughout the history of Laurinburg.
"Laurinburg Presbyterian Church has been a strong presence in the community for a century and a half," Wentz said. "We are very proud to be here to celebrate the first 150 years, and we invite everyone to join us for worship and to attend the programs we will be offering this weekend."
An updated written church history will be available, and a Power Point presentation of the church's 150 years will be shown throughout the weekend.
Laurinburg Presbyterian Church is located at 600 West Church Street in Laurinburg.
