HAMPTON, Va. - Add another trophy to Chekimbrell Jefferson's already-crowded mantle.
Jefferson, a middle blocker for the Fayetteville State volleyball team, was named the CIAA's Player of the Year for the third straight season on Tuesday.
Already the Broncos' all-time leader in kills, the school's 2008 Female Athlete of the Year and MVP of the 2007 CIAA Volleyball championshiptournament, Jefferson's third player of the year award left her stunned.
"I was in disbelief when I found out," she said. "I started off the season with an injury and I didn't know where it was going to take me. This is all very humbling."
A native of Laurel Hill, N.C., Jefferson led FSU and finish second in the CIAA in hitting percentage and third in the conference in kills per set.
Jefferson's contributions to FSU's (15-8, 12-2 CIAA) season weren't limited to numbers however.
"She's an exceptional young woman and exceptional player," Broncos head coach Reeshemah Johnson said. "She's so intimidating. She's very aggressive and she's just a dominant force on our team. When she's on the top of her game there's none in the conference like her."
Since Jefferson arrived at FSU, the Broncos have lost only four CIAA games.
"She's one of the most dominant attackers there has ever been in our conference," said Johnson, who captained FSU's first CIAA Championship team in 1996. "I've never seen anyone win the award back-to-back. For her to win it three times in a row is exceptional."
"I embrace this whole experience. I'm going to miss this school, this program and the girls,” added Jefferson. “This is an awesome way to end the season, it really is. It puts a big smile on my face."
