Last week, Gibson’s town council approved a switch in garbage collection companies that will bring an increased expense to the town, but Gibson has not yet forwarded that cost to town residents.

In recent years, the town contracted for weekly garbage removal with Wagram Paper Stock. The company requested a raise last month from $9.50 to $12.50 per month for each home or business served.

This follows a dollar increase from $8.50 in late 2011, which Gibson did not forward to its residents. Buildings served by trash removal pay $10 monthly.

At the Gibson town council September meeting, the council approved a switch to All Points Waste Service, effective in October, at a cost of $10.50 per home per month to the town.

The cost of garbage collection has not increased for Gibson’s residents, and when All Points takes over in October, the price they pay will be less than the cost incurred by the town.

“We had already absorbed one raise before that we didn’t pass to the citizens, so I’m thinking that we may have to raise it to the citizens, but that will be decided at the next board meeting,” said town clerk Myra Tyndall.

The garbage fee paid by Gibson residents to the town also covers the cost of removing tree limbs and leaves, a task performed by the town’s sanitation department.

Some 225 homes are currently served by town trash collection.
