A store clerk is listed in critical condition after she was shot at a convenience store near Maxton during an armed robbery on Saturday, according to investigators.

Tonya Ransom was shot in the head at the N.C. 83/U.S. 501 Quick Stop near the intersection of those highways.

The 40year-old Pembroke woman was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg.

Ransom was later transferred to a Charlotte hospital.

A sheriff's report said that a masked man entered the business at about 11:30 a.m. and demanded money. During the robbery the man shot Ransom as she stood behind the counter.

Deputies found her lying on the floor behind the counter "with blood around her head area." Lawmen found a black revolver on the floor beside her.

The report said a 15-year-old boy witnessed the shooting.

The robber is described as a black man, between 5 feet, 7 inches and 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a medium build.

He wore dark clothing and a black ski mask.

According to the report, witnesses told police he was riding in a blue or dark-colored Chevy S-10 pickup with extra-wide mud tires. Authorities said the robber might be injured.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Robeson County Sheriff's Office at 910-671-3100.
