While some see the holidays as a time to max out credit cards or arrange elaborate decorations, there are still a good number of people in Scotland County who chose to celebrate in a religious setting.
Several area churches will remember the reason for the season with cantatas, concerts, caroling and plays and pageants. here is a brief listing of some upcoming events.
Multitudes Church is presenting the Christmas comedy “Christmas in Cricket County” tonight at 7 p.m. The church is at 15301 Jim Calhoun Road Laurinburg
On Sunday, New Hope Baptist Church of Laurinburg will present a Christmas Cantata “The Heart of Christmas.” This will be held at the Avinger Auditorium at St. Andrews College. There will be two performances — at 10 am and at 3 p.m.
“We cordially invite the public to come and share in this beautiful presentation of what Christmas should be about,” said New Hope member Pat King. There will be beautiful music presented by the Choir of New Hope plus some of our friends from Springfield Baptist Church of Wagram.”
Also Sunday
— Dothan Presbyterian Church in Maxton will hold a Christmas candlelight service at 3 p.m. Rev. Erika Ingram of Ashley Heights AME Zion Church in Rockingham will serve as speaker.
— The Gibson United Methodist Church will host its own holiday program. A Christmas carol singalong is planned for 4 p.m., followed by games, refreshments, and a visit from Santa in the fellowship hall.
— St. John United Methodist Church plans to celebrate the season by visiting nursing homes. The churches is asking members and friends to join in caroling beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Carolers are expected to visit nursing facilities and shut-ins. Hot dogs and food will be provided at the conclusion of caroling.
— Silver Hill Presbyterian Church in Marston will sponsor its annual Christmas Candlelight Service at 4 p.m. Christmas music will be provided by the Spring Branch Missionary Baptist Church Senior Choir. Evangelist Edna Wall will bring the sermon.
Dec. 16
— Saint Luke United Methodist Church will celebrate its 37th annual Lovefeast at 7 p.m. The event will feature a brass quartet prelude, set to begin at 6:30 p.m. There will be anthems by the choir, carols by the congregation and the traditional coffee and buns will be served during the fellowship time.
— St. John United Methodist Church will present a Christmas music program called “Come, Let us Adore Him” featuring special soloists and musicians at 6 p.m. There will be a special visitor for children in attendance during refreshment time following the service.
Dec. 24
Gibson UMC will hold a Christmas Eve holy communion at 4 p.m.
