William Carter blew away the field to win the 25th Annual Scotland County Amateur championship golf tournament last weekend.

Carter followed an 8-under 64 on Saturday at Scotch Meadows with a 4-under 68 on Sunday at Deercroft, winning the tournament by 22 strokes with a two-day total of 132.

Coming in second place at the Amateur was Mac McIntyre (78-76 — 154), and placing third was Stewart Redding (78-76 — 154), who equaled McIntyre's score, but settled for third on a tiebreaker. Finishing fourth was Bill Morgan (75-80 — 155).

Carter has now won five Scotland County Amateurs in the last six years. Championships in 2009, 2008, 2007, 2005 and 2004 leave him just one title shy of matching McIntyre (1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2002) and Steve Wright (1985, 1986, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996) for the most Amateur wins. These three players account for 17 of the 25 titles in the tournament's history.

Carter's 64 at Scotch Meadows on Saturday was his best round in an Amateur tournament. In his five tournament wins, Carter has shot under par in 10 of the 12 rounds he has played. He has shot par once and a 1-over 73 on the final day of the 2007 Amateur is his only round over par. Carter is a total of 39 shots under par in the five tournaments he has won. His remarkable 22-stroke victory in this year’s tournament matches the total number of combined strokes he won the previous four championships by.

Sam Baker won the Championship B flight with a score of 150 (79-71). Finishing second, third and fourth (tiebreaker used) were Chuck No (80-75 — 155), Charles Grant (81-74 — 155) and Stephen Pippin (79-76 — 155).

David Ganus (83-76 — 159), Joe Poteate (83-80 — 163), Alton Gentry (83-80 — 163) and Billy Locklear (83-81 — 164) were the top finishers in the Championship C flight.

Blake Caldwell (85-76 — 161), Mike Nance (85-81 — 166), William McRae (87-81 — 168) and Joe Radloff (89-82 — 171) were first through fourth in the second flight.

C.D. Bounds (90-81 — 171), Jonathan McInnis (90-81 — 171), Steve Pullen (91-82 — 173) and Linwood Huffman (90-88 — 178) were the top finishers in the third flight.

Willie McPhatter (96-85 — 181), William Hunt (96-86 — 182), C.J. Radloff (96-87 — 183) and Tony Ganus (102-84 — 186) were the class of the fourth flight.
