Letter to the editor:

On Sept. 2, I had a problem with a gas tank from a local company. It was making a hissing sound and the fumes were strong. I called the number that was on the tank. Since it was after hours, they were closed. The message had a number to call in case of an emergency.

I called the emergency number several times and the answer machine came on saying that, if the message wasn't for certain employees, don't leave a message. What kind of emergency service is going to tell you that, if it is for a business that deals with hazardous materials?

Then I called the Sheriff's Department to see if they had an emergency number. The lady that answered the phone tried to call them and got the same response. Then she connected me with the Fire Department. The gentleman who answered the phone said he would call, and if he couldn't get an answer, he would come out.

About 15 minutes later, a vehicle pulled into my driveway. A man got out of the vehicle and I asked if he was from the petroleum company. He said no, he was from Stewartsville Fire Department. He told me he called but couldn't get an answer. Shortly after that, I heard sirens. There were two fire trucks and four vehicles. The people were very helpful and generous. They didn't leave until they knew that my granddaughter and I were alright.

On behalf of my granddaughter and me, I would like to say cheers and thank you to all the gentleman and volunteers from the Stewartsville Fire Department for a job well done.

Keep up the good work.
