CSS H. L. HUNLEY Civil War Submarine REPLICA
COMING TO AVERASBORO BATTLEFIELD MUSEUM
FRIDAY-SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4-6, 2009
A full-sized replica of the CSS H. L. Hunley, a Civil War submarine, will be coming to the Averasboro Battlefield Museum on December 4-6. The exhibit is open to the public. A parking fee of $5 per vehicle will be charged to offset expenses and to support projects of the Averasboro Museum.
The H. L. Hunley Mobile Exhibit, a full-sized replica of the original, was built in the spring and summer of 2004 by John Dangerfield and Holton Cutler with the help of 15 volunteers.
The original CSS H. L. Hunley, was the forerunner of the modern submarines, and did sink the Union ship, USS Housatonic. The Hunley demonstrated both the advantages and disadvantages of undersea warfare, as, after the successful sinking of the Housatonic and before its crew returned it to port in Charleston, SC., the submarine sank losing all crew members aboard. During the experimental phase of the Hunley, its inventor and person for whom it was named, Horace Lawson Hunley, was lost aboard an unsuccessful test of its capability.
The original CSS H. L. Hunley, located below the sea in 1995, was brought to the surface, and is currently being prepared for preservation at a museum in Charleston, SC.
The Averasboro Battlefield Museum is located just north of Godwin, NC, and just south of Dunn/Erwin, NC, at 3300 NC Highway 82. The exhibit will be open from 10 AM until 4 PM daily on December 4-6. Reservations for school group viewings on Friday, December 4, may be made by calling the Averasboro Battlefield Museum between the hours of 10 AM-4 PM, Tuesday-Saturday, at telephone number (910)-891-5019.
A Civil War Christmas will be also portrayed by various living history persons on the battlefield during the December 4-6 weekend.
