LAURINBURG — The St. Andrews University Dressage team won one of the two Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) shows held at the St. Andrews University Equestrian Center over the weekend.
On Saturday, the St. Andrews team finished fourth with two teams from Averett taking first and second with a mixed team that included two St. Andrews riders finishing third.
“Saturday was frustrating with the placings being lower than I would have liked,” said coach Jackie Dwelle. “Ironically, even though we placed fourth, we still earned five points (for second place) because Averett (who won) placed second with their second team and a mixed team comprised of riders from various schools including two of our riders, placed third.
“Riders receive the ribbons for that day, but each school can only earn points for one of its teams,” Dwelle explained. “The mixed teams receive no points as they are comprised of individual riders and do not count towards the end of year scores.”
Sunday saw St. Andrews take first place, with enough points to earn first place in the overall standings by one point over Averett.
On the individual front, the strong finishes by a pair of riders particularly pleased Dwelle.
“I am very happy for Elizabethe Weeks, who won the Introductory division both days, and Abigail Skillman who attended the Ethics Symposium Thursday, Friday and Saturday and came back Sunday to place second at first level,” Dwelle said. “Both these riders worked very hard last year to improve their riding and this weekend their efforts paid off.”
Kristen Parker also added a second place finish to the scores.
McCall DiMarco had third place finishes both Saturday and Sunday, as did Logan Teeter.
Megan Pustarfi, Myleah Coleman and Emily Wright Thomasson contributed fourth place finishes.
Thomasson also scored a fifth place on the weekend with Pustarfi adding a sixth place finish. Sarah Jones and Claire Pollard also had sixth place finishes in the competition.
The St. Andrews Dressage Team will next compete Nov. 24 at Averett University.
