falls in final
LAURINBURG — The doubles team of Leslie Floyd and Sallie Wegner finished in second place in the conference tournament Thursday. The pair reached the championship game but fell to Kaitlyn Newman and Josie Lee of Pinecrest in three sets, 1-6, 6-4 and 4-6.
Floyd and Wegner still earned a ticket to the regional tournament, and will be Scotland’s sole representatives at the tournament in Wilmington next week.
The top five in both the singles and doubles brackets advance to the regional. Scotland’s other doubles team of Makayla Gilmore and Bella Whitehead finished in sixth place, and Anna Griswold finished sixth in singles to just miss a spot.

Because there are so many teams, games will be played at both the Morgan Complex and Optimist Fields. Teams range in age from the 8-and-under squads to high school travel teams.
Bobcats lose C Haywood
for at least 12 weeks
CHARLOTTE (AP) — The Bobcats have announced that backup center Brendan Haywood will miss at least 12 weeks with a stress fracture in his left foot.
The team said in a release Thursday that Haywood will have surgery next week to repair the problem.
Haywood has been struggling with the ankle in recent days and had an MRI and CT scan on Wednesday ordered by foot specialist Dr. Bob Anderson. The team says the test results revealed a stress fracture in the navicular bone.
Surgeons are expected to place two screws in the bone to reinforce the stress fracture and help it to heal. Haywood will be immobilized for 12 weeks. Haywood played in 61 games last year for Charlotte and averaged 3.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
