LAURINBURG — The St. Andrews University men’s and women’s soccer teams dropped a doubleheader to the Barton College Bulldogs on Tuesday amidst a driving rainstorm at a soaked Knights Field.
The Lady Knights (3-9) lost 2-0 to the Lady Bulldogs as they had trouble breaking through against Barton’s tough defense and strong goalkeeper Carson Moore.
Moore made five saves for Barton (7-4) while Knights goalkeeper Jessica Griffith made seven saves but allowed two goals. Barton’s Jodi Barber scored both of their goals, the first in the 35th minute and the second in the 84th minute of play to oust the Knights.
SAU’s best shot at a goal came in the first half when sophomore Rebecca Harper shot a ball off the crossbar. Barton was able to outshoot the Knights 20-10 overall with sophomores Harper, Jessica Martinez and Hayley Peck leading with two shots apiece.
A high-scoring game erupted in the men’s contest as seven total goals were scored including five in the first half before Barton rallied with three minutes to go with the decisive goal and the 4-3 win.
Current AAC Player of the Week Zimiso Stewart scored the first two goals for the Knights increasing his team lead to seven on the year. Unfortunately, each time he scored, Barton followed up with a goal just mere minutes later to tie the ballgame. Barton would then score their third goal in the 41st minute to take the 3-2 halftime edge.
SAU would then counter as they tied it up in the 66th minute on a header by junior Caio Lima for his sixth goal of the season off a beautiful assist from freshman Mikel Azcona. Stewart’s two goals were each assisted by senior Ben Parr on the first and sophomore Breno Calegari on the second.
Stewart and Lima also combined for seven of the Knight’s 12 shots. SAU falls to 5-8 with the loss while Barton improves to 4-5-1.
The soccer teams will remain home to host conference foe Point University on Thursday at noon for the women’s game and 2 p.m. for the men’s at Knights Field.
