LAURINBURG — When the Scotland volleyball team is communicating well, they are efficient. But staying sharp throughout the entire match is the challenge, said assistant coach Jessica Milligan after the Scots’ three-set victory over Whiteville on Tuesday.

The Scots blew through the first set, winning 25-10. The second started out as more of the same, with Scotland jumping out to a 10-0 lead before Whiteville could record a single point. The run was due in large part to the serving of Katelyn Hunt, who collected eight aces on the evening. She also had seven kills.

But then Whiteville would put together a run of its own in the second set when Scotland began to have communication problems.

“We just got relaxed,” Milligan said. “When we get comfortable out communication isn’t as good.”

Whiteville scored eight straight points in the second set to pull within four of Scotland. The visitors sustained the streak by keeping the Scots away from their usual style of play. The Scots run almost every play through their main setter, Avery Callahan. During the second set Whiteville served the ball close to the edges of the court, forcing the Scots to scramble and often not have time to set up the play properly.

The Scots eventually found their focus again, however, and went on to win the second set 25-18. Scotland sealed the win in the third set despite giving up the first four points of the game. The final set was back-and-forth until Scotland pulled away to win 25-16.

Madeline Milholland lead the Scots offensively with 19 kills and three aces. Callahan collected 31 assists, and Jessie Kee had seven kills and two blocks.

Scotland improves to 13-1 overall with the win, and 5-0 in the Southeastern Conference. The next home match is Sept. 26 against Purnell Swett. The junior varsity begins at 5 p.m. and the varsity will play the match is over.
