Scotland’s tennis team collected its first win of the season in dominating style Thursday, defeating Hoke County 9-0.
The Scots team won each of the six singles matches and all three of the doubles matches to sweep the Bucks at the Scotland Tennis Center in Laurinburg. One of those players who came away with her first win of the season was Makayla Gilmore, a senior at Scotland. In addition to the fight on the court with her opponent from Hoke, Gilmore was battling an illness.
“I had a little cold but I knew I had to come in and win for my team,” Gilmore said.
Gilmore won her singles match 6-2, 6-0 and went on to win her doubles match, in which she was paired with Bella Whitehead, 8-3.
It was Scotland’s first win of the season, putting them at 1-2. The team opened up the season with a road loss at Purnell Swett, then returned home and suffered a 6-0 loss to Pinecrest on Tuesday in a weather-shortened match.
But Thursday the Scots came out as the better side, dominating throughout singles play.
Leslie Floyd played in the top spot for the Scots and won her match 6-0, 6-0. Sallie Wegner also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Third-slotted Anna Griswold won 6-1, 6-0 and Camryn Ellis defeated Hannah Locklear 6-4, 6-1 in the fourth singles game.
“It was good, and challenging,” Ellis said of her match.
Whitehead rounded out the singles victories for the Scots with her 6-2, 6-1 win. Floyd and Wegner paired up to win their doubles match 8-0 while Griswold and Ellis won 8-3.
Scotland coach Michael Whey said the team is improving as the season goes on. Whey, who is in his first year as leader of the Scots, has a team where three of the six players are freshmen.
“The thing with a young team is you’ve just got to get better every day. It’s not even week-to-week, but day-to-day with us,” Whey said.
That improvement has been coming, and Whey said the Scots should be able to stay competitive in every match this season, despite having such a young squad.
The Scots return to action on Sept. 10 when they travel to Lumberton. The next home match is Sept. 12 against the Richmond Raiders.
