The St. Andrews University cross country team hosted their first home meet in a few years on Friday evening as they hosted three colleges plus a few high schools and middle schools.
SAU’s sophomore Kaitlyn Stempien, of Raleigh, paced the Lady Knights as she finished in second place in the 5K race (3.2 miles) with a time of 21:06, finishing just three seconds shy of first place Natali Olveda of Salem College.
Other Lady Knight placers were freshman Morgan Tedder, of Rockingham who came in 11th with a time of 22:43 while fellow freshman Kara Thornton came in right behind her with a time of 22:48 in 12th. Freshman Ashley Barrera then came in 16th with a time of 23:01 while senior captain Karlee Arnold finished in 20th at 23:38 to place fifth on the team.
The top five Lady Knights could only muster a third place overall team finish with 60 points, finishing behind runner-up Salem with 49 and team champion Meredith College which finished with 33 points. Meredith won with five runners placing in the top nine. Columbia International then rounded out the teams as they came in last with 83 points.
Other Lady Knights that finished were freshman Rebecca Yuswak in 31st with a time of 25:34 and sophomore Emily Scott who came in 42nd at 27:58.
On the men’s side, only two teams competed with Columbia International winning by default due to having enough runners to qualify for the team score. SAU only had four runners entered in the race, one short of the five needed to score points. Drew Lindman of CIU won the 5K with a time of 16:59 topping SAU’s freshman Danzel Jefferson who came in second at 17:13.
Junior Tyler Beaver then finished fourth at 18:05 while freshman Chase Kopp came in sixth at 19:24. Fellow freshman Michael Hare rounded out the Knight runners with a time of 20:28 in eighth place.
The cross country team is next in action this Friday evening as they travel to Wilmington to compete in the Adidas Seahawk Invitational.
