I am excited to share with you again for this year what we have planned for our Murphy Brown Laurinburg After Five (LAF) events. It will be a fun year with great bands, lots of children’s activities, and best of all (at least in my opinion) a wonderful opportunity to spend time with some of the greatest people around — yes, all of you who live in Scotland County. I love watching you all come out with your lawn chairs and seeing the smiles on your faces really is one of the things that makes my job so enjoyable.
This year, the committee has made a few more changes. The day of the week is different. We are moving the LAF to the second Friday of the month from May to August. Yes, I said Friday! So, mark your calendars accordingly. This way most of you won’t have to get up and go to work the next day. That always is a good feeling.
The bands were carefully selected this year and the lineup is superb. There are new bands added to the list to bring in a new crowd, there are bands that have come in the past and were a hit. The following is a list of dates and bands:
May 9 – Fantastic Shakers; June 13 – Hip Pocket; July 11 – Goldrush; Aug. 8 – The Tams.
The host site again this year will be the James L. Morgan Recreational Complex, located at 1206 Turnpike Road. The Morgan Complex allows for family friendly activities, such as the swings, splash pads, and playgrounds. We are grateful for the partnership with the complex, the county staff, and Scotland Place for hosting our events.
We will continue to have a $1 charge per person for the events, with kids under 12 free. The charge is nominal, so no one should be discouraged from attending. In July, however, instead of paying the $1 fee, everyone is encouraged to bring school supplies to help us “Fill the Bus” that evening to support our Scotland County Schools. The supplies then will be divided among our schools and given to children who otherwise could not afford their supplies.
In August, I hope you will come out and join us, because in addition to having the Tams to entertain, we also will be holding a Fighting Scots Football kickoff event. The team will join us for introductions during intermission and then they will be available for autographs and pictures. We are excited to be able to introduce our Fighting Scots to the attendees of the event.
For those of you who come out at 5:30 p.m. to get the perfect spot, we have a treat for you. We will have a disc jockey who will start playing at 5:30 p.m. at each of our events to provide entertainment just before the band goes on to perform. That same DJ will crank it back up during intermission for those of you who want to keep on dancing. The DJ will be playing lots of those fun dance tunes to get you off your feet and wiggling your hips.
We are very grateful for the support of all of our sponsors. We could not put this event together without their support. I would like to give an extra big thanks to Murphy Brown who has agreed again to be our naming sponsor. If you would like to be a part of our sponsorship program, call me today! I would love to discuss it with you.
We are looking for vendors for each of these events. If anyone is interested in being a vendor, I encourage you to call Kaye Buie at the Chamber at 910-276-7420 or email her at email@example.com. This is sure to be another exciting year for this concert series. I look forward to seeing you at each one!
