Have you ever stopped to think about where you spend your money? In the past several years, “Shop Local” campaigns have exploded and everyone encourages their communities to visit and buy from local stores.

I’ve had people comment to me that we just do that here, but in fact, cities like Raleigh and Greensboro also have “Shop Local” campaigns, so it is definitely not a small town concept. It happens everywhere.

I would like for you to think about the money you are spending, not only your retail dollars, but for everything you spend. For instance, do you have a local insurance agent? I’m talking about that person who when you have a question about your insurance, you can talk with face to face. Do you think about buying gas before you leave town, so that your money will stay here in Scotland County? What about the person who sprays your home or office for bugs or termites — are they a Scotland County company? What company do you use to print your business cards? Is that company local? Do you have someone locally landscape your yard or pressure wash your buildings? What about your advertising dollars? Do you advertise at The Laurinburg Exchange or WLNC to support the local medias that support this community? Do you think about these types of things when you are making a purchase or contracting a service?

I ask you to think about keeping your money and support locally anytime you pull out your wallet or checkbook and think about who you can use locally for your services. This will help our local businesses to grow. Our local businesses growing can have a major impact on unemployment, because as they grow their business, they’ll need more people to work in those businesses. The job you may help support might just be your next door neighbor’s.

Please keep your hard earned money here in Scotland County. Supporting each other and building our businesses is a great way to build our community.
