LAUREL HILL — A passenger injured in a head-on collision that killed two others on Tuesday night remains in critical condition at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, according to state Trooper C.L. Pridgen.

Pridgen said 42-year-old Grady Dewayne Smith, of Church Street in Cordova, received “disabling” injuries in the impact that killed Laurel Hill residents Brad Rivers, 30, and Linda Norton, 42, instantly.

Smith was transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital where a helicopter awaited his arrival and “he was life flighted to Chapel Hill hospital,” Pridgen said.

Pridgen confirmed earlier reports that Rivers was traveling north on Crawford Lake Road when he crossed the center line and struck Norton’s 1999 GMC Sonoma pickup head-on. Pridgen said authorities suspect alcohol may have been involved, adding there was a “heavy odor of alcohol coming from his person.”
