Christmas to bring sun, warm temps

LAURINBURG — Despite the unseasonably warm weather this past weekend, temperatures on Christmas Day shouldn’t be high enough to make Santa break a sweat.
The National Weather Service has predicted that on Christmas Day, the temperature in Laurinburg should be a bright and sunny 45 degrees, with Northeast winds at about 5 to 9 mph. Some clouds will roll in on Christmas night for a low of 29.
According to meteorologist Steve Pfaff, the temperature is about 10 degrees cooler than last year’s high of 55 and the average temperature of about 54 degrees that the city has held for the last 30 years. The average low is 32 degrees.
“January is the coolest month, chronologically speaking, for the Laurinburg area,” Pfaff said.
Laurinburg saw 78 degrees on Dec. 7 and a low of 24 degrees on Dec. 13. Last year in December the highest temperature was 74 degrees on Dec. 4 and 5 while the low dipped to 26 degrees on Dec. 23 and 31.
“Variations in the jet stream have created a roller-coaster ride in temperatures,” Pfaff said of this year’s weather. “The weather patterns come and go rather quickly.”
These rapid changes lead to the familiar “periods of cold and periods of warm” that the town has been experiencing. Although there will be rain Monday and today, Pfaff said that the highly anticipated day is going to be mostly dry.
Based on past records, the temperatures are usually in the low to mid-50s in January. By March, the temperatures jump up 10 degrees and the peak reaches 91 degrees in July.
This year, the highest temperature was 97 degrees on June 14 and the lowest temperature was 18 degrees on Feb. 18. Last year the highest temperature was 107 degrees on July 1 and the lowest temperature was 19 degrees on Jan. 4 and 5.
Pfaff said though it may be too late for a white Christmas, the area could still get a sprinkling of a few flakes.
“We could still have snow,” he said. “It’s very progressive with the fronts coming through.”
