Applications open for energy assistance

LAURINBURG — Beginning Dec. 1, those elderly and disabled in need of help paying their heating bills may apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program.


Qualifying households have a member aged 60 or older, or a member receiving services from the Division of Aging and Adult Services who is also determined disabled by the Social Security Administration. Applications begin on Feb. 1, 2014 for all other households.


Applicants should present proof of income, including current pay stubs, Social Security awards, VA, or retirement; savings and checking accounts; property, stocks, bonds and other assets; Name, date of birth, and social security number of each household member; and a bill or invoice from their heating provider.


Payments will be made directly to heating vendors.


Applications will be accepted at the Scotland County Department of Social Services Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m.; Scotland Place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10 a.m. -1 p.m.; the Wagram Recreation Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m.- 12 p.m.; Partners In Ministry on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m.; and the Restoring Hope Center on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.


Transportation to application sites is available through Scotland County Transportation at 910-277-2416. The homebound may contact Four-County Community Services at 910-276-7629. Native Americans may also contact the Lumbee tribe at 522-2206
