Mothers get dolled up for a good cause
‘Mom Prom’held tonight

LAURINBURG —Monies raised at tonight’s “Mom Prom” will go to benefit any number of causes that very few people have even heard of.
Hosted by the God’s Gift Support Group, a regular meeting of mothers who have lost children, the event’s proceeds will be directed to the Tristan Brown ABCs of Rare Diseases Foundation, which helps families of children with rare conditions with costs associated with required surgeries, medicines, and hospitalization.
“One of our families, they’ve been out of work because their child has surgery,” said Chaka Davis, who started the foundation last year. “We also supplied gas to Children’s Flight of Hope to fly a little girl with liver cancer from Durham to Chicago.”
The foundation has assisted families throughout North Carolina, from as close as Laurinburg and as far away as Michigan, according to Davis. She started the group and the foundation in honor of her son Tristan. Born with Jeune Syndrome, a rare condition that affected his lungs and kidneys, Tristan died last year at the age of four.
The “Mom Prom” will begin at 6 p.m. at Scotland Place with food, fashion modeling, and music supplied by D.J. Choice. Admission is $10 at the door. A candle-lighting ceremony for loved ones who have passed on will also be held.
There will also be a raffle for a hair styling appointment, manicure and pedicure, and spa gift set.
God’s Gift support group meets every other month, with some 20 core members. Each meeting has a theme related to grieving for and remembering lost children.
“We have members who’ve lost children through gun violence, cancer, tragic accidents and some with rare conditions,” Davis said. “We talk about how we feel or how our family members take it. My family doesn’t like to talk about it — they get more emotional than I do.”
