FAYETTEVILLE —The American Heart Association is inviting Sandhills residents, including those in Scotland County, to stamp out heart disease mile by mile.

The Sandhills Heart Walk, the association’s signature fundraising event, will be held on Oct. 12 at 9 a.m. at Festival Park, located at the corner of Rowan Street and Ray Avenue in Fayetteville.

The walk is open to everyone from the Sandhills region, which includes Cumberland, Lee, Moore, Hoke, Robeson, Scotland, Bladen, Sampson and Harnett and counties. The American Heart Association predicts that more than 1 million walkers will join 300 Heart Walk events across the country this year.

Highlights of the event are the one- and three-mile walk and a post-walk Heart Health Celebration, which will include tents, free outdoor fitness workouts, a bounce house and other activities for the whole family.

According to the association, the walk is designed to create a community among participants, spread knowledge about reducing disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke, generate excitement for a new or renewed commitment to heart-health living and celebrate successes in lifestyle changes toward improved health.

Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, and stroke is No. 3.

To register, visit www.sandhillsheartwalk.com. For information about the walk, email sandhillsheartwalk@heart.org or call 910-364-9054.
