WAGRAM — When it comes to coloring, children are familiar with the phrase, “stay within the lines.” Electricity follows that same rule.

Lumbee River Electric Membership Cooperation (LREMC) celebrated National Electrical Safety Month recently with a fourth grade billboard contest. Three winners were selected out of more than 100 entries from area schools. The winners received a $25 cash prize in addition to having their poster displayed on a Lamar billboard during the month of May.

“Steer clear from power lines” is the message that Tyler Bland, a student from Wagram Elementary, displayed on his poster. He is the son of Junior and Betty Bland. His poster will be displayed on U.S. 74 Bypass in Scotland County.

“Teaching our children the dangers of playing around electrical outlets and appliances is so important,” said Mark Walters, director of corporate safety at LREMC. “It only takes one time, one object — or one little finger — into an electrical device for a child to be seriously injured.”
