LAURINBURG — A recent Richmond Senior High School graduate was awarded the 2017 James H. Underwood, Jr. Scholarship earlier this month.

The scholarship is given in honor of the late Underwood, a former Scotland County Board of Education member, and created to represent his ongoing legacy.

Maggi Chambers of Richmond County was this year’s recipient and was given $1,000 scholarship towards her college tuition. She was selected through an application process on the basis of outstanding academic performance, exceptionally strong extracurricular activities, extraordinary community service, strong letters of recommendations, and a well-written essay.

Chambers, the daughter of Lester and Carol Chambers, is a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club. She has participated in Girl Empowerment Workshops, completed a Law Intern ship under the direction of attorney Derek Crawford, volunteered in the Richmond County Teen Court Program, as well as being named the 2015 Volunteer of the Year, and served as president, vice president, and regional officer of the Varick International Youth Council after two terms.

The James H. Underwood, Jr. Scholarship is built on a foundation that advocates education and community service. The scholarship motto is “Uplift and Outreach” and the committee strives to assist local students that have the same desire to first better themselves, then reach back to enhance their community.
