To the editor:
I am an elementary school teacher in Scotland County. I love my job, I love my students, and I love the community. It just breaks my heart knowing that next years students may have difficult time learning in the best environment possible due to money restraints.
The future of Scotland County resides in the students of today. It is not fair to them or anyone else living in Scotland County to deny them the best education possible. If you take away the teacher assistants, increase class size and reduce teachers it ultimately affects everyone in the community. I consider education the most valuable asset to this and any community. It is where your future leaders are made, it is where values are instilled, it is where economic growth will eventually come from. When I sit and think of the future I think of the children first. Then I think, has Scotland County done its best for the students of today? Are they preparing each and every one of these kids for the future? Is it about the students or is it about the money?
For me and most educators in the county, the issue isn’t about us at all; it is about putting students and their needs first. We want to see each and every student progress and do well academically, behaviorally and socially. We understand that it takes all of us to make a productive citizen, from kindergarten on up to the twelfth grade. We can not be successful on our own. As the saying goes, “it takes a village to raise a child.” It takes each and every person living in Scotland county to say that their future matters. If not the future of yourself, the future of your child, the future of your grandchildren, and the future of all of Scotland County is dependant on education. That is the basis of where great citizenship and economic growth come from.
I am asking you to keep assistants in grades kindergarten through second and class sizes small so students can learn at their best and teachers can teach to their fullest potential. I am asking you to say yes to a brighter future. I am asking you to put the children first and give them a brighter future. I think Scotland County and its citizens of today and tomorrow are worth every penny, don’t you?
