Leak should welcome military training facilty
To the editor,
Every time Councilman Curtis Leak pontificates, he becomes a living example of an old adage, which says: It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.
“They think that because the north side doesn’t say anything that they can just put anything they want there, but that doesn’t mean they can go and play G.I. Joe on the north side,” Leak was quoted as saying in a Sept. 18 story. What an asinine statement. Again, I refer you to the previous maxim.
I see no harm in allowing a military training facility to occupy the old QualPak building, along with the added benefit of jobs and tax revenue to our fair city. Perhaps Councilman Leak is against both jobs and tax revenue. Maybe the only government spending the councilman approves of is welfare, section 8 housing, food stamps or any of the other myriad programs that the taking class receives.
As for the safety issue, with the houses and the businesses in such close proximity, I could not envision anyone firing high-caliber weapons there. Berms can be constructed in such a fashion as to make a pistol training range safe. The training facility could be a boon to Scotland County. The military has to train somewhere, so why not in Laurinburg? Other cities have training facilities and fare just fine. It is not like we are reinventing the wheel. Let’s welcome them and their jobs and tax revenue.
Thank you for your time.
