A video unveiled during NC Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker’s visit to Laurinburg this week may encourage investors and tourists to “Target Laurinburg.”

Called “Target Laurinburg/Scotland County” by its creators, the video includes a number of highlights from the community’s growing public-private partnership and other cultural features.

“You call it public-private partnership, we call it community,” is the message that flashes at the beginning of the nearly four minute video, which is publicly available on YouTube.

“The ‘Target Laurinburg’ video was something we put together to educate folks about the community,” said Tourism Development Authority Director Cory Hughes.

The video name drops a number of local companies, on both the industrial level and the Main Street level.

“The idea came out of an effort of a smaller group that included people from the city, county, the chamber of commerce, the TDA and economic development to put together something that could be used as a recruiting tool, promotion tool and educational tool,” Hughes said.

During her visit, Decker said that she was particularly impressed with the “Target” idea, calling it “a great example” of what must be done by smaller communities to create jobs.

Decker also praised the county’s work to develop tourism.

“Tourism has to be a part of what we do in North Carolina,” she said.

The video is part of a larger movement to unify the county’s development work under a single banner, Hughes said.

“It’s a brand, something that’s iconic for economic and business development.”

According to Hughes, the “Target” umbrella will allow a number of different groups to speak with a single voice.

Many of the members of the “Target” planning group were also members of the “Committee of 100,” an organization similarly designed to allow business community members to assist in the recruitment of new investment.

“We want everybody to Target Laurinburg and Scotland County,” Hughes said.

Also referenced in the video is the county’s education system, including its early college program. The revitalization of downtown Laurinburg, the Small Business Innovation Center, the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport and the new US-74 highway exit lights are also in the presentation.
