LAURINBURG — A McColl man is being held in the Scotland County jail after stealing items from Walmart and leading Laurinburg police on a chase that reached 130 miles per hour and crossed the South Carolina state line. Jon Paul Pearce, 42, of 409 N. Main St., is charged with careless and reckless driving; driving 130 mph in a 70-mph zone; driving 115 mph in a 45-mph work zone and felonious fleeing to elude arrest. He was also served with three warrants for larceny, according to Assistant Police Chief Cliff Sessoms. His total bond was $12,500. Sessoms said officers received a call at about 8:15 p.m. from Walmart's security team, who said Pearce had fled the store in a blue Mustang with silver stripes. Police began chasing the vehicle after spotting it on U.S. 15-501, but Pearce took an on-ramp for U.S. 74 West, soon reaching speeds of 130 mph. Sessoms said Pearce then merged onto N.C. 79 heading towards South Carolina, but lost control and wrecked soon after crossing the state line. Pearce “waved extradition,” Sessoms said, and was taken back to North Carolina, where he was charged. It is not clear what Pearce had taken from Walmart or how he wrecked his vehicle. Sessoms said no one was injured in the wreck.
