LUMBERTON — Scotland County is under tornado watch until 4 p.m.

A watch means that conditions are ripe for producing a tornado, while a tornado warning means one is coming.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a line of showers and thunderstorms that is nearing the county will make conditions favorable for tornadic activity.

“There isn’t a great chance, though there is a 100 percent chance of rain,” said Stephen Keebler, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “Still, with stronger winds and rain, it is better to be safe than sorry.”

Cumberland, Columbus, Bladen, Hoke, Lee, Moore, Harnett, Richmond, Sampson and Robeson counties are also under a tornado watch.

Tornadoes can strike with little warning. Residents should be aware of their surroundings and take note if wind suddenly dies down, or the air becomes very still. Other signs of an approaching storm include dark, often greenish skies, low-lying clouds, and a loud roar, similar to a freight train engine. A cloud of debris can mark the location of a tornado, even if there is no funnel visible.
