PEMBROKE — Two inmates are among three people charged with trying to smuggle marijuana into the county jail, according to Sheriff Kenneth Sealey, a failed effort that was made during a court hearing last week

Michael Channing Brewington, 35, appeared in District Court in Pembroke on Nov. 13 on charges of violating his probation and five counts of damaging a currency-operated machine. Terry Louis Chavis, 24, was in court that same day on a previous charge for assault by pointing a gun.

Sealey said Brewington and Chavis were seen speaking to a female in the courtroom who was later identified as 29-year-old Courtney Renee Hunt. During the recess, both inmates went to the restroom, and were searched upon returning to the courtroom.

Officials found up to half an ounce of marijuana and a pack of cigarettes on Chavis, said Sealey. He said the items had been wrapped in paper towels and placed under the toilet seat by Hunt. Brewington was not in possession of any drugs, said Sealey.

Brewington, of 121 Arminda Drive in Rowland, was arrested Friday for felony conspiracy. He appeared in court Saturday, where his bail was set at $5,000.

Chavis, who lives on 294 Wildplum Road in Maxton, has been charged with felony conspiracy, possession of a controlled substance and providing controlled substances to an inmate. He was arrested Friday and bond was set at $2,500.

Hunt, of 148 Wainwright Drive in Pembroke, was arrested Monday and charged with providing drugs to an inmate, providing tobacco to an inmate and felony conspiracy. Her bond was set at $5,000.

The three individuals know each other, said Sealey, but their exact relationship is unclear.
