LAURINBURG — “I’ve lived here for many, many years,” said 104-year-old Scotia Village resident Mary Hafer.

Watching other residents, staff and their families as they celebrated Scotia Village’s 25th anniversary with “The Village Highland Games,” Hafer said she was reminded what makes the retirement community a special place to live.

“It’s the people. That’s the best part,” she said.

As more than 100 others celebrated with games and dancing, Hafer said that she was “happy to just sit here and observe.”

Directed at kids of all ages, the games were a big hit among residents and their many children and grandchildren, said Susan Roberts, director of resident services at Scotia Village.

“At first many of the residents were asking if they were allowed to play the games, but once they realized they were a lot of them participated and had a good time,” Roberts said.

Many residents took the opportunity to throw shaving-cream-pies in the face of staff member Jackie McColl.

Others took their shot at dropping Associate Director Allen Johnson into a giant dunk tank full of water.

“They had a lot of fun doing that,” Johnson said. “At one point it wasn’t even fair, they weren’t even hitting the button and I was going in there, but it was for a good cause.”

Money raised from the dunk tank was contributed to Relay for Life, one of the nonprofits supported by Scotia Village.

While the retirement community celebrates its Dec. 12 anniversary every year, the 25th anniversary is being celebrated with several events throughout the entire year, Roberts said.

“We are going to have a big celebration also on the date of our founding. It’s been a lot of fun for everyone here, including the staff,” she said.

Among the final Scotia Village residents to leave Thursday’s celebration, Hafer said that she was happy to linger a while longer.

“I’m from Kentucky originally,” she said. “But I’m happy to be here.”
