LUMBERTON — A local veterinarian suffered severe facial damage Thursday night when he was bitten on the face by a dog as he attempted to give the animal a rabies shot.

Dr. David E. Brooks, of the Pembroke Animal Hospital, was injured at the White House Fire Department at a clinic by the Robeson County Veterinary Medical Association during which the vaccine is provided at a discounted price.

“He was bent over and the dog bit him in the face,” Bill Smith, director of the Robeson County Health Department, said.

The dog that bit Brooks was a black and white pit bull.

“He went to a vehicle to vaccinate a dog and the animal apparently got away,” said Dr. Sonya Chavis, an associate of Brooks. “When he went to vaccinate the animal he was bitten in the face.”

Chavis said that Brooks was transported by ambulance to Southeastern Medical Center and than flown to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, where he was undergoing surgery this morning. He was expected to be discharged from the hospital later this afternoon.

Smith said the animal taken to the Robeson County Animal Shelter, where it remains quarantined this morning.

“We are trying today to find out the vaccination history of the animal,” Smith said. “That will determine if the animal needs to be quarantined for at least 10 days.”

Smith said that deputies from the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office were the first to arrive at the fire department in response to the emergency.

Brooks is an active advocate for the Robeson County Veterinary Medical Association, and appeared recently before the Robeson County Board of Commissioners to promote the rabies clinic and to inform the board about the association’s SNIP program, which begins on Tuesday. During that program, the veterinary clinics spay and neuter dogs and cats at a discounted price.

The rabies clinics continue today and the SNIP program will also be held as scheduled next week.
